We are delighted to welcome Andrew Parfett to the Yoga Kula studio on Saturday 17th November for an Introduction to Qigong and Shiatsu workshop.

What is Qigong (Chi Kung)?

‘Qi’ or ‘Chi’ means energy, and in yoga some of our students might know it is called ‘Prana’. ‘Gong’ or ‘Kung’ means work. Therefore, the word Qigong (often spelt Chi Kung or Qi gong) means the exercise of your internal energy. It is a 5,000-year-old Chinese healthcare modality that has endured the test of time and is making a tremendous resurgence at the threshold of the 21st Century. Qigong exercises mix body postures, movement, breathing and meditation for a healthy life, spiritual advancement and/or martial arts training. People might recognise some of the body postures during this introductory workshop.

Qigong is not a panacea but it is certainly highly effective health improving and maintaining practice. There are many benefits of Qigong which are increasingly recognised all over the world. The benefits of Qigong range from relaxation of the mind, stress relief to increased energy, vitality and helping to heal degenerative and chronic diseases. In China and around the world millions of people practice Qigong exercises each day to successfully treat diseases ranging from hypertension to cancer.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. Shiatsu works on the whole person – not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being, therefore it is a very powerful tool to those who use it.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can sometimes alleviate stress and illness which results in better health and wellness.
