Homeopathy Awareness Week 2014
14th-21st June 2014

Feel good inside and out

Homeopathy Awareness Week

This year the focus for Homeopathy Awareness Week is skin and how homeopathy can help with minor skin complaints.  Our skin is the largest organ in the body covering about two square metres in total.  It plays a vital role in our overall wellbeing, it protects us, keeps us warm, helps us to cool down and allows us to interact with the world.  Our skin also shows how healthy we are on the inside.

Skin complaints are one of the most common problems that patients seek homeopathic consultations for.1  As a classically trained homeopath I approach skin disorders in a holistic way, so I don’t just look at the skin symptoms in isolation.

I won’t necessarily prescribe topical creams or even homeopathic medicines directed towards skin conditions alone, but instead I spend time exploring all aspects of an individual looking at how the body is functioning as a whole, including the impact of physical and emotional stress on the skin.  Prescriptions are tailored to each individual patient according to their specific symptoms.

Case study

I saw one of my clients, a 14 year old boy, in February 2013.  He suffered from clusters of warts on his hands, particularly round the fingernails, which started when he was 8 or 9.  He had had a tendency to fold his arms or hands over one another or bend his fingers to hide them as he felt the warts were “extremely ugly” and an “eyesore”.  He had tried a number of conventional treatments but these hadn’t been successful in getting rid of the warts.

He was quietly spoken, serious and controlled – giving little away emotionally.  He was intelligent and liked maths and computing and read a lot.  He was keen to get things right and was very exacting.

I prescribed the homeopathic remedy Thuja – not just because it has a strong association with warts – but because it is a remedy associated with a desire to hide or cover up and keep things secret.  Those needing Thuja also tend to be deep thinkers, who can be stiff and cautious with strangers.  They can have fixed ideas and can have a tendency to want to be perfect.

Little had changed after the first dose, but after increasing the potency (strength of the remedy) his warts started to shrink and after repeating the remedy once more the warts and his verrucas continued to shrink.  3 months after starting homeopathic treatment, his mum reported that all his warts had gone, he had stopped hiding his hands and seemed much more confident.  Over a year later he is still wart free.
