My Journey into Yoga

Angela Sykes is the director of Yoga Kula Leeds, a Senior Yoga Teacher, and a Yoga Teacher Trainer. She is an ambassador for Sweaty Betty, and has featured several times in Yoga Magazine, including as a cover star. She shares her personal Yoga journey with us below.

When I was 11 I fell from a horse. Although luckily nothing was broken,  since that day I felt stiff, tired and in pain. I developed aches and pains especially in my neck and shoulders and itchy, red, angry eczema.

After several trips to my GP,  being given strong pain killers and steroid creams,  and eventually told I had to learn to live with how my body felt….I carried on not really knowing how to feel better in my body.

At 22 when I had graduated from university, the pain in my body had become worse. I started to think about who could help me to feel better. I was finding that Western medicine couldn’t provide the answers I was looking for, and so I decided to Google the people who lived the longest in the world. After learning that it was Japanese women, I started to think about how I could learn from these women, and realised the best way was to live among them, immersing myself in their culture.Angela // Journey

I bought a one-way ticket to Japan and didn’t return to the UK for three years.

Here, I immersed myself in Tai Chi, Karate, Hot Springs, Shiatsu massage, acupuncture and much more! I learned to cook Japanese food and live the Japanese lifestyle. Over the next few months my body began to feel better and my angry red eczema disappeared.

That’s where the Yoga began.

One day my karate teacher was working on some moves I didn’t recognise from class and I asked which discipline they were from. After explaining that they were yoga postures, she invited me to copy her practice.  I started to work on the moves with the attention and breathwork I had learned in my martial arts training.

And the rest is history, I moved back to the UK in 2010, and I opened Yoga Kula in 2012. Since then we’ve welcomed so many wonderful teachers and students into our community.

If you would like to share your yoga journey, please get in touch!

Lucy + Charlie // Kula Community

Kula Community Comes Together After Tragedy // Lucy + Charlie

“My favourite thing about Kula is the intention and dedication we have to encourage and support others” – Angela Sykes

The word “Kula” is a Sanskrit word meaning community, family or tribe. We see everyone as an important part of our Kula, and try to make the experience the very best it can be for everyone who comes along. Our community recently came together over some devastating news.

Lucy and Charlie // Kula Community

Dedicated Kula student Lucy and her partner Charlie, have spent many months to make their business plan a reality. The pair have been planning, purchasing expensive equipment, and renovating an old van to a camper van in order to achieve their ambitions.

They had travelled the world for the last seven years, however, they were ready to settle back in the UK after arriving home in Leeds in late May.

The pair were at CarFest North in Cheshire on July 25th on Lucy’s 33rd birthday. This was the second festival of a whole summer crammed full of work all around the UK to enable them to save enough money to settle down into the life they have planned together.

While in the van which they had refurbished to travel the country in, Charlie believed something was wrong with the gas and when he went to check, it ignited, causing burns to his body.

After Charlie ran out from the van to see Lucy waiting outside, the couple desperately sprinted across the festival fields before turning to see the van explode – destroying over £25k of their possessions including all of their work equipment and sentimental items.

Lucy said she has received a lot of help from the community, who have come together since the shocking fire.

She said: “The Red Cross helped so much at the festival.

“The festival put us up in temporary accommodation and other festivals have offered to get me transport so I can attend to work and earn my living.

Angela Sykes, Yoga Kula’s founder said:Lucy + Charlie // Kula Community

Yoga is about more than the practices we do on the mat. Yoga is about community and helping others. We are saddened that Lucy has lost her possessions in a fire, and so we started to think about what we could do to help.

“We are reaching out to our community to ask them to bring in a piece of yoga wear. Something they love, rather than something they no longer want or need.

“This act of giving and supporting others in their time of need is the most powerful thing we can do, and the deepest form of yoga.”

We came together to share Lucy and Charlie’s message along with the Yorkshire Evening Post, who have helped to share their story within the wider community.

If you are able to donate yoga clothing, this can be dropped off at the Yoga Kula Studio, 114 Harrogate Road.

Monetary donations can be contributed using the link below.

Somatic

What is Somatic Yoga?

We invite you to join Senior Yoga Teacher Fabiano Culora every Tuesday at 9am, for our Somatic Approach to Yoga class.

What makes a somatic practice?

Somatics is a field within bodywork and movement studies, which emphasises internal physical perception. This way of working explores the body as perceived from within – without the focus on external stimuli.

This class is an integration of Yoga and Somatic practice, with a reflective and meditative structure.

A space will be held and time given to deeply sensing and listening to our body and the environment. We begin opening our attention to how we initiate movement, and what qualities of embodiment arise from noticing internal sensation support. Imagery and embodied perception help to deepen embodied inquiries.

Our curiosity to recognise ease, freedom and connection allows the movement to unfold. It could be an opportunity to check in with yourself, restore energy and discover new ways of moving.

We have a body made of many parts, each seeking a sense of whole. This organising principle requires the development of an inner witness to embrace ourselves fully. Learning to consciously track our movement processes and nurtures our inner journeys. When we widen our perceptive field we become present to what is offered from our body’s experience and perspective.

There is potential in this class to consciously re-organise and re-pattern movement and posture that has become difficult and uncomfortable. Breath and movement encouraged in union to support the vitality of all body systems. A continually fresh engagement of the whole body to ground and space through meditative stillness and dynamic movement.

What are the benefits of Somatic Yoga?

This holistic practice aligns the body structurally and energetically, improves dynamic whole body responsiveness and creates balance in movement. A mindful practice that helps bridge embodied consciousness into everyday life.

Connects movement with breath reawakening creative flow and imagination.Calms a busy mind and releases an overworked/overtired body.R

egular practice develops expressive qualities in other activities due to an increase body awareness, inner support, adaptability and mindfulness.

Who is the class aimed towards?

Each class will encourage a ‘beginners mind’ to practice.  Therefore, this class welcomes those new to yoga as well as experienced practitioners. The perfect way to ease and unwind yourself into the day, find ways to support your personal Yoga journey, and gather  movement resources for everyday living.

About Fabiano’s classes

My sessions explore body-mind connectivity, experiential anatomy and the relationship between expressive moving arts and therapeutic processes.  I offer students support in the form of a release based, somatic approach to yoga whilst maintaining the deepest respect for the transformational possibilities that arise. Click here to read more about Fabiano and his teaching experience.

When?  Sunday 4th August, 12:30-2:30pm

Where? Yoga Kula Leeds

Book? Click here to make your booking

We experience our anatomy, physiology and being; discover our animal or child-like nature as we explore, play and ‘struggle’ with irregular movement situations. Discover organic and inorganic pathways, so we see how adaptable we are and where we need to stay and develop.

In this athletic and creative workshop workshop you will explore how we physically communicate with our body, developing an awareness that can be taken into our day to day lives, helping you to solve problems and respond to the unpredictable environment we live in.

During the workshop Ben will focus on key areas of development including:

Strength
Mobility
Physical Communication Skills
Trust
Sense Strategy
Situational Awareness — becoming more adaptable/efficient.

There will also be an emphasis on what we can learn about our anatomy and physiology through experience, and how we can be creative as we encounter the unknown, by placing you in different movement situations using both cooperative and confrontational games, as well as working with a partner to dissolve habits.

This workshop will be a great supplement to the practice of yoga teachers, dedicated yoga practitioners and anyone interested in the development of the human body/mind.

NB:

This will be a physical class, that will also involve touch.
Suitable for anyone with a physical practice.
If you need to sit out and observe at anytime that is also ok, we can learn a lot from the outside too, and you can rejoin when you are ready.

What Yoga Kula’s director Angela has to say about Ben’s work:

“Ben is so creative and the way he approaches movement takes you out of your box and offers you a fresh and exciting approach. I have been lucky enough to work with Ben and his input has changed the way I approach my own yoga practice and has really shook up how I approach my teaching – highly recommend if you love movement, growth and development”

Friday 16th August // 7:30-9:30pm Meditation in Motion

Meditation in Motion // £20

“I can’t meditate!” Anonymous.

So many of us say we would like to meditate but we find that sitting still is hard to do. The body complains or the mind is easily distracted, and more often than not both of these things occur. If this sounds like you then come and try our Meditation in Motion workshop.

Meditation in Motion with Jenni Crowther will allow you to enjoy all the benefits of seated meditation, such as deep internal peace and a concentrated mind, without the less-welcome aspects of seated meditation.

Under certain conditions our yoga practice can become a moving meditation, where we surrender completely to the breath and feel peaceful and relaxed, even as we move.
This workshop will guide your attention deep into the body with a slow Vinyasa Flow practice, that repeats movements with ever-subtler attention. As you acknowledge the authentic experience you are having, your thoughts will fade into the background as a spontaneous meditative quality arises.

Jenni says:

“This method totally transformed my yoga practice and the way I now move my body. I have more respect for the intelligence of my body, I have healed from injury, became more peaceful within myself and even had moments of deep personal transformation. For me, this is the essence of the Yoga Sutras. Encompassing Ahimsa (kindness or non-harming), Satya (truthfulness or honesty) and Aparigraha (non-greed or generosity). It’s simple, beautiful, graceful and intimate, and it’s a gift to be able to share it with others.”

Sunday 18th August // 1-3:30pm Binny Ayurveda August

Ayurveda + Yoga // Balancing the Body //£ 27.50.

“The body is your temple. Keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in.” B.K.S Iyengar

Ayurveda or ‘knowledge of life’ is an ancient, natural approach to health and healing. This approach appreciates that we are all unique and offers a framework in which we can understand our mind and body and begin to notice when we lose our inner balance. Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga and as a team they offer a powerful way for us to maintain our health and happiness through the seasons of our life.

Each of us has an individual prakriti or unique energy pattern which is ours at the moment of conception. Ayurveda categorises our patterns as being made up of three Doshas or forces. Our Doshas can become unbalanced due to diet, lifestyle, the seasons, your age and other factors. To stay healthy we must firstly understand our personal pattern; and secondly, understand ways we can maintain balance. In this workshop you are shown clear ways to alter diet, lifestyle as well as yoga practices to maintain doshic balance.

To begin this workshop Binny Saandal will guide you through a physical yoga practice to get the body's energy moving. During this practice Ayurvedic principles will be applied to the asana practice with the intention of balancing the Doshas. Moving through this bespoke Ayurvedic Yoga Flow you will work with the Doshas using Mudra, Pranayama and imagery. We'll explore using techniques to calm the nervous system and ground and quiet the mind.

The soothing continues as you wind down with nurturing restorative poses to recharge, heal and rejuvenate, before finishing with a restful Yoga Nidra and Savasana with marma point massage to deeply release energetic blocks and invite deep relaxation.

Lammas time also called Lughnasadh (pronouced loo-nassa), falls at the beginning of August. Historically celebrated with harvest festivals by our ancestors, it is a Pagan celebration of Celtic origin.

The fesitival reminds us that we need to look after and respect the beauty and vulnerability of the Earth around us, with the same being true of ourselves. Lammas is a time for reflecting on the seeds we have planted in our own lives during the year, and any flowers or crops that might have grown from our efforts.

Lammas is a great time to practice gratitude or loving kindness meditations and to really think about what, and who, we are grateful for in the height of summer light.

The Workshop Lammas Harvest

This workshop will be a celebration of all things feminine and an invitation to develop self love and inner awareness. Shifting from the high Yang energy of summer to bring a more feminine Yin focus to our yoga practice.  As the fiery potent summer energy begins to wane, we are once again are drawn to turn our attention inwards. We will combine calming, soothing and healing breath practices, alongside a combination of Yin & Yang yoga. Exploring the initial building inner heat with flowing sequences in honour of the sun, before slowing down with soft, fluid movements. Through this practice, we’ll connect to our inner rhythms and energies.

We will finish our session with deeply nourishing restorative yoga practices and plenty of time for reflection, deep relaxation and rest, being mindful of our cycle and the needs of our own body on the day.

All women are welcome. Tea and some delicious treats will be available at the end.

Please bring a journal and pen, and if needed an extra blanket and/or cushion to make a really cosy nest at the end of the workshop.

You will receive a handout to take home about the session with some Lammas inspired meditation questions.

Reiki + Restore

New Class // Reiki + Restore

Exciting news!

We’re launching a brand new class with one of our ever popular teachers on Monday 5th August. Start your week with a Reiki + Restore class with Amanda Winburn.

So that you can get to know more about the practice of Reiki, and what Amanda has in store for you, we took some time out to hear all about her new Reiki  + Restore class. To launch the class in true Kula style, the first session is F R E E so ensure to book your space below!

What is Reiki?

Reiki directly translates as Rei – higher power, and Ki- life force.

Reiki is the spiritually guided life force energy, for the healing of emotional, physical & mental disease. Feeding the body with fresh energy and unblocking the old. Practitioners use hands on healing transferring universal energy directly into the student.

Where did you train as a Reiki practitioner, and what are your experiences?

I trained with Reiki master Felicity Weston at Ookushana and I’m about to start my next level of training. The experience of totally surrendering to source, and allowing myself to be a channel for pure energy to be transmuted is unbelievable. I’ve already had so many wonderful experiences with so many benefits!

What are the benefits of starting your week with a Reiki healing practice?

To start the week with a restorative and reiki practise is so therapeutic. It involves aligning ones energy, clearing out some emotional “stuff” before moving forwards with your week with fresh energy. It’s like doing all the housework inside of you and then turning on the light.

What are the principles of Reiki?Reiki + Restore

The principles of Reiki are not purely on a physical level but more about a spiritual awakening. I find these words resonate both within me personally, as a student and as a teacher.

1 – Just for today, I will not worry

2 – Just for today, I will not anger

3 – Just for today, I will be grateful

4 – Just for today, I will earn my living honestly

5 – Just for today, I will give kindness to every living thing.

We know you love travelling all over the world building, up your knowledge and experiences. How do you think this has impacted your teaching style?

I love to travel and I love to learn, and so I always attend workshops and classes wherever I am. In this way I grow, and I pass on this knowledge. I’ve always felt that it is my responsibility to pass everything I learn onto those around me – that’s how we learn. Together.

Whatever yoga practice you have, whether you’re a dynamic Ashtangi, or Yin is more your thing – to just release into a bolster and surrender into stillness during a Reiki session, whilst a practitioner works into your energetic body …. pure bliss …:

Are you excited to be bringing Reiki to Yoga Kula? What are you most looking forward to?

I’m very excited to bring this beautiful, powerful practice to somewhere as special as Yoga Kula, somewhere so healing and pure. I hope to share the incredible benefits of this practice with as many people as possible. I think it’s very fair to say that I love being a part of the Kula team. In my free time I’m always in the studio, and it’s where my love for yoga began! We are all students and all teachers, and there’s always someone you can learn from.

Soothing Flow + Kirtan

Soothing Flow + Kirtan // Jen Nevin + Mike Auger

We join yoga teacher Jen Nevin and musician Mike Auger on Saturday 13th July, for an evening of  Soothing Flow + Kirtan (Yogic Music). The workshop will run from 6:30-8:30pm.

Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves…” Elton John

Beginning with enchanting live music and gentle grounding yoga poses, supported by plenty of props, you’ll unwind to the sounds of the tongue drum.  A blissful blend of tones known to attune you to your surroundings. From this place of peace we’ll connect to the breath through gentle pranayama techniques that soothe the mind, before moving into an intuitive soothing flow designed to create space and encourage the free flow of energy within. Our live musician, Mike, will respond to the energy in the room, creating a unique soothing soundtrack that moves with you as well as moving you. From this flowing yoga sequence we’ll move effortlessly into stillness, guided by Jen into a meditation that supports the mind and connects the body to our life source.

Attuned to the ground, body and our deepest self, we’ll arise from meditation to learn a selection of mantras. We’ll be accompanied by Mike on a range of instruments including the traditional Indian Shruti Box. At this point you’ll be able to be as active or as still as you wish, joining the mantra by singing, dancing, playing one of the percussion instruments or by simply enjoying the healing and joyful vibrations of these ancient sounds.

What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is a Sanskrit word meaning “praise” or “eulogy.” It’s also known as sankirtana and is used to describe a form of call-and-response chanting involving mantras or hymns.

Based on ancient chants, it has the ability to quiet the mind if listened to with intention, and is often used as a meditation. The wallah (leader) sings the mantra, and the rest of the group sings it back. This is optional and there is no pressure to join in with the singing aspect of the evening. If you would like to learn more about the practice, you can do so by clicking the links below.

Click the video below for a sneak preview of what the evening holds.

Please feel free to bring your own instruments, we are always happy to create together.

The workshop will end with herbal tea and delicious homemade treats, as we say goodnight to each other and welcome the evening ahead with nurtured minds and restored bodies.

With a background in therapeutic arts, and as the founders of Displace Yourself Theatre Company, Jen and Mike have been helping people discover new ways to express themselves through body and voice for over 7 years.
